Question Description

I’m working on a communications question and need guidance to help me learn.

This speech is an opportunity for you to speak out about something that either bothers you in society, or that you are passionate about. Think of this as an opportunity to get up on your ‘soapbox’ and speak to an issue in our world that you find lacking and needs change. You may also connect this to any of the previous speeches you have done, or use it to test-drive ideas for Speech #5.

I am not requiring any outside research for this presentation, but avoid making this into a rant.


I am assessing this speech purely on completion, so think of this as a slight reprieve before you get into your next speech. As long as you make the effort to present your ideas and don’t go too far under or over on your time, then you will receive credit for this assignment.

Body II (Satisfaction) A. The first thing to think of is to reach out for professional help and access mental health services 1. Take time to research what is available around you in order to get the help you need immediately. B. ​Know that the myths you’ve heard of are not true. 1. Mental health issues don’t “go away” like it’s a cold or flu and has nothing to do with how weak you are. Your genetics, physical illnesses or injuries, family history, and life experiences are significant factors involved in mental health. Not all problems are easily solved the same way either with some needing different treatment than others. 2. Mental health problems never stay the same throughout life. New experiences in life can change or influence how you feel so the issues you have currently can be temporary.

Additionally, treatments and services help you so you can get better and even recover completely. 3. You can help someone especially if you’re a close friend or loved one that they have. Let them know you’re there for them as a supportive partner, help them find the services they need, treat them with respect like you normally would, educate yourselves or others on facts about mental health, and don’t label them as if they’re an outcast. C. Exercising daily, eating well, getting enough sleep, and practicing relaxation methods also helps our physical, spiritual, and emotional health in the recovery process. Body III (Visualization & Action) A. By seeking professional help and taking the time to take care of your personal needs, you’ll be in a healthier state of wellbeing mentally and physically. B. On a bigger scale, with more people acknowledging and addressing their mental health issues, the likelihood of suicide as an answer is less common. C. Being aware of the misconceptions concerning mental health and why it should be taken seriously will allow the conversation about this issue to be more common and people will be more understanding or accepting of those who suffer from it.

Conclusion:​ Overall, mental health should be recognized as an important problem that many people should address and handle whether they are victims of mental health issues or know close ones that have it. If we continue to highlight the importance of mental health, this will open up a safe space for everyone to be more mindful of those who struggle with it. Sometimes a little checkup or reminder about this is all we need to ensure that we don’t lose ourselves or our loved ones. Soapbox Speech Outline: Gender Neutral Bathrooms Proposition: You (the audience) should advocate for gender-neutral restrooms at public places. I. Attention Step: A. Imagine being denied access to a restroom for being who you are. Imagine living a life in fear, only to use a simple restroom. B. In a recent U.S survey of transgender people, 1 in 10 people have reported that they have been denied access to a bathroom in the past year. C. Living as a transgender male and based on my personal experience, it was difficult for me to use the bathroom without the thought of being judged or questioned.

II. Need Step: Everyone needs a bathroom to use. A. We need to provide a safe place for not only transgender people to use the restroom to their own comfort, but everyone should be allowed to use a restroom comfortably. B. We need to spread awareness and educate the public about transgenderism, providing outlets for transgender people to express their worries and concerns. C. We need to break gender roles and have a safe and open place for everyone. We need to allow everyone to express their gender identity and freedom. III. Satisfaction Step: By advocating for unisex bathrooms, it could not only provide safety and a piece of mind for transgender people, but it could also save some money. It’s beneficial for everyone! A. Implementing unisex restrooms can allow parents to accompany their children, without any awkward situations. B. Having gender-neutral restrooms can save some money for businesses.

Implementing a unisex bathroom could leave more room for commericial use. IV. Visualization Step: Imagine a world with gender-neutral restrooms. A. Everyone will finally realize that a restroom is a restroom, and gender shouldn’t define it. B. Without gender-neutral restrooms, transphobia could potentially increase within our society, leading to a dangerous and unsafe place for transgender people. V. Action Appeal Step: Spread awareness and advocate for unisex bathrooms. Educate yourself on transgenderism and how restrooms could affect their lives. A. We need to build a sense of security and safety for restrooms, and remind everyone that we should be comfortable when using the bathroom. B. We cannot enable change without educating the public and spreading awareness of the lives of transgender people and their own personal business. C. At the end of the day, a toilet is a toilet.
